Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices.
Narrative
Technology is an amazing thing that opens all types of doors for us. However, students need to learn that in order to be responsible digital citizens they have to give credit when it is due. In my classroom I will teach my students on how to properly document sources and follow copyright laws. In order for my students to realize how important this is I have to model it myself. If my students see me as their teacher using proper digital etiquette they will mirror my behaviors. I also believe it is also important to teach my students that everything they put on the internet is permanent, even if they delete it. The best way for me to model this for my future students is to start now. I realize that anything that I post on social media now can effect me when applying for jobs two years down the road. I also feel as if it is very important to inform students of all the potential dangers that can come from technology as well. In addition to making students aware of these dangers, I will also teach them how to avoid them.
Internet Safety
Before I allow my students to use the internet in my classroom I will instruct them on the dangers they may encounter. Students need to be made aware of things such as internet predators, false advertisements, and identity theft. By instructing my students on what these dangers are and how to avoid them they will be able to navigate safely and confidently on the internet. As part of a media literacy assignment in my Integrating Technology class we watched a video created by the European Association for Viewers Interest. The video follows a little boy on his journey through the ocean to reach the island of Media Literacy. Along his journey he encounters all of the dangers found on the internet and conquers each one. This is a great video I could use in my class someday that relates internet safety in a way 5th graders could easily understand. The video teaches students how to be media wise when using technology. You will find this video posted below.
